Carob Thematic Centre of Anogyra
Discovering
the Heritage of the Carob Tree
The Carob Thematic Centre of Anogyra was created with the aim of highlighting the long-standing tradition of the community which is associated with the carob tree and its valuable products. It is based in the renovated building of the former Primary School of the village and aims to function as a modern space of knowledge, experience, and cultural heritage.
The project was implemented within the framework of the Grant Scheme for the Revitalisation of Rural, Mountainous and Remote Areas through the Creation of Authentic Experiences for the Enrichment and the Upgrading of the Tourism Product, launched by the Deputy Ministry of Tourism. The scheme aims to highlight the authentic identity of the Cypriot countryside, promote the local cultural heritage and create unique visitor experiences, while also strengthening the local economy and supporting the sustainable development of rural communities.
Through modern museological approaches and the use of new technologies, visitors have the opportunity to learn about the history of the carob tree, the traditional process of producing carob syrup and pasteli, as well as the importance of carob products in nutrition, the economy, and the cultural heritage of Cyprus.
The Carob Thematic centre includes, among other features, an interactive wall, digital presentations, audiovisual material, and exhibition displays that allow visitors to interact with the history and traditions of the region. Through these interactive experiences, both adults and children can explore the journey of the carob from the tree to its final products.
As an added value, the Carob Thematic Centre is connected to the Carob Thematic Route and the Carob Museum of the community, creating a complete network of cultural experiences, that promotes the history, gastronomy, and cultural heritage related to carob.
